It is always good to back up your database at least once or twice a month, depending on the growth of your site and how active it is.
I have the server company back up ALL domains on the server 2 times a week. Even so, I still like to keep a backup on my computer.

Now that you have backed up your domain and Database, It is always good to Keep your traffic links clean, so when your members log in to click the traffic links, they are not bombarded with pop ups or see all kinds of dead links. If you do this 3-4 times a year, it keeps the bad traffic links cleared out.
(I am guilty of this myself.. and am busy cleaning my sites out now).
